Radiology technician imprisoned for purposeful false-negatives

A radiology technician was recently sentenced to six months in prison for giving false-negative mammogram results to 1,289 women because she was 'behind in work' and 'disinterested in her job.'

The shocking details left the victims' families wondering how technician Rachel Rapraeger, 33, could be so selfish and indifferent to the fate of patients. The defendant blamed personal issues for her decision to rubber-stamp patients' mammogram cancer tests as negative without examining them.

One of the victims addressed Rapraeger in court, telling her how her false-negative allowed her cancer two months to spread to her lymph nodes before she got a proper diagnosis.

While allegations of a failure to diagnose cancer are somewhat common, they are usually the product of a doctor or technician's negligence - not a deliberate indifference to the life of the patient.

Many believe Rapraeger's punishment is not severe enough. Fortunately, she can still be held liable in personal injury lawsuits and, if appropriate, wrongful death claims. Those lawsuits will allow injured plaintifffs to hold Rapraeger accountable while recovering money damages.

It is likely that Rapraeger's employer failed to properly supervise her or act on warning signs about the quality of her job performance. If proven, the employer will also be liable.
