Lawsuit: Surgeon's morcellator spread deadly cancer

A woman recently filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer of the Storz Rotocut Morcellator, claiming that the surgical device spread deadly cancer throughout her abdomen.

The plaintifff had no history of endometrial cancer before her hysterectomy in April 2013, but doctors detected the cancer throughout her abdomen soon after the operation. She believes that the electric morcellator spread cancerous cells during surgery, making her cancer more difficult to treat.

Product liability lawsuits against electric morcellator makers have recently increased, as more surgical patients believe that the devices aid the spread of cancer when it is already present near a surgical site. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently released a warning about morcellators and the possibility that they may spread high-mortality forms of cancer already present within the body.

Morcellators have become popular because they are less invasive than traditional surgical tools. There are at least five morcellators available to health care providers in the U.S.

If you are considering gynecologic surgery you should discuss morcellator use with your surgeon so you can weigh the potential risks and benefits. If you believe you have been harmed by a morcellator, you may have the right to file an unsafe medical device lawsuit. Speak with an experienced attorney to learn more.
