Pedestrian killed in Columbus, driver caught 1 mile from accident

While the weather is getting a little cooler in the Columbus area as fall approaches, it is still vitally important for all drivers to keep a watchful eye out for pedestrians. The simple act of watching out for people who are walking can save a life. Sadly, some drivers do hit pedestrians. In a recent pedestrian-car accident, the pedestrian died.

The accident happened when a woman who was driving an SUV had a head-on collision with a pickup truck. Her SUV careened off the road and struck the pedestrian. The man was walking on the sidewalk or in a driveway, but it isn't believed that he was in the roadway.

After he was struck, the pedestrian was dragged through a fence and taken with the SUV as it struck other vehicles in the parking lot. The man was pronounced dead by paramedics shortly after the accident.

The woman who was driving the SUV left the scene of the accident. Witnesses followed her for blocks and police caught her approximately a mile from the accident so Columbus police detectives were able to interview her. While it remains unclear why she left, it is clear that she ran from the scene on foot. Her SUV remained at the scene after she told a bystander to shut the engine off after he remarked that she should turn it off because it was racing.

Having to learn that a loved one died in a tragic Ohio car accident is something that nobody wants to go through. For a person who has to go through that, holding the responsible party liable is often a priority. In some cases, this can be done through the civil court by filing a wrongful death claim. Making sure that you understand what you should do and how to do it might help to take some stress away in a time that is already stressful.
