How can riders stay safer in Ohio motorcycle accidents?

Motorcycle accidents happen for many reasons, both in Ohio as well as other states in the country. As a motorcyclist, you need to be aware of the common causes of accidents, as well as how serious this can be.

According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motorcycle deaths doubled between the years of 1999 and 2008. During the time period of 2001 to 2008, more than 1.2 million people were treated at the hospital for non-fatal motorcycle accident injuries. Additionally, 34,000 people were killed.

As a growing number of people continue to drive a motorcycle, as opposed to a passenger vehicle, the possibility of fatalities and injuries also increases.

Riders can take steps to improve their level of safety while driving a motorcycle. Here are some tips to consider:

-- Always wear a helmet.

-- Never get on your bike after you have been drinking alcohol or using drugs, illegal or prescription.

-- Wear protective clothing that can help prevent injury, such as road rash, in the event of an accident.

-- Drive defensively, such as by maintaining the appropriate following distance.

-- Pay close attention to the road conditions, especially if mother nature has taken a turn for the worse.

All types of motorcycle accident injuries, from broken bones to road rash, are serious. In many cases, this type of accident will lead to surgery and months of recovery.

Even when you are driving as safely as possible, another person, such as the driver of a car or truck, could cause an accident. If you are the victim, you may wish to meet with an attorney to talk about your legal rights.
