Is there treatment for spinal cord injuries?

Some of our Ohio readers have been touched by a spinal cord injury. They are either going through this on their own, or helping a loved one who has been injured in this manner.

Spinal cord injuries happen for many reasons, often as the result of a motor vehicle accident.

There is no denying the fact that spinal cord injuries are extremely dangerous, frequently leaving a person paralyzed. At the same time, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, there are treatment strategies that have been proven to be effective.

For instance, aggressive treatment and rehab can minimize the long term effects on the nervous system. In some cases, this can even restore bodily functions that were previously lost.

How a spinal cord injury is treated and just how much progress the person makes depends largely on the injury itself. Spinal cord injuries fit into one of two categories: incomplete or complete. With an incomplete injury, the ability for the spinal cord to send and receive messages from the brain is not lost. With a complete injury, the person will lose all motor function and sensory below the injury.

There are treatment strategies for spinal cord injuries. Anybody who suffers such an injury should work closely with his or her medical team to ensure that the right treatment approach is taken, both after the injury as well as over the long run.

If a person suffers a spinal cord injury due to the negligence of another, such as a drunk driver, the victim may wish to learn more about one's legal options after receiving the necessary medical treatment.
