Symptoms of severe traumatic brain injuries

A mild traumatic brain injury can lead to a variety of health concerns, including some that can last for the rest of a person's life.

With a severe traumatic brain injury, the end result is even more serious. This can result in permanent neurobiological damage that changes a person's life forever.

Severe traumatic brain injury is classified as a loss of consciousness for a period greater than six hours, as well as a Glasgow Coma Scale of 3 to 8.

The impact of the injury depends on many factors, including but not limited to the type of accident, functions affected, rate of recovery, resources available during recovery and the areas of the body not affected by the injury.

It is common for a person with a severe traumatic brain injury to suffer from difficulties with:

-- Memory

-- Attention

-- Concentration

-- Distractibility

-- Language processing

From a speech and language perspective, this can lead to: inability to understand, speaking slow or fast, problems writing, problems reading and slurred speech.

Other problems related to severe traumatic brain injury include blurred vision, loss of smell, loss of taste, ringing in the ears and seizures.

No two people are alike, and the same can be said for severe traumatic brain injuries. One person may be able to overcome this type of injury, while another struggles to beat some of the side effects detailed above.

Severe traumatic brain injuries are often the result of a motor vehicle accident. If a person is injured due to another party's negligence, he or she may be in position to recover compensation.
