What are the long term symptoms of brain injury?

Since no two people are the same, there is no way of saying how a brain injury will impact a person in the short and long term. That said, many years of study have proven that brain injury can have long lasting impacts that can be a challenge for the person to deal with.

Before we get into some of the exact symptoms of traumatic brain injury, here is a passage from the Ohio Valley Center for Brain Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation that explains the potential severity:

"The committee's conclusions that TBI is associated with later seizures, cognitive deficits, depression, aggression, unemployment or social isolation were not surprising."

Some of the most common symptoms that persist or develop after six or more months include:

-- Seizures

-- Depression

-- Aggression

-- Cognitive deficits

-- Premature death

-- Social isolation

-- Post concussive symptoms

-- Progressive dementia

-- Endocrine dysfunction

-- Growth hormone insufficiency

The cause of the traumatic brain injury does not matter nearly as much as the end result. Some people are able to escape long term symptoms, while others find themselves dealing with one or more of those detailed above.

Nobody wants to suffer a brain injury, but many people involved in an accident find themselves in this position. In addition to immediate medical attention, it is important for these people to know what they could be up against, in terms of symptoms, in the future.

If a person suffers a brain injury in an accident, the negligent party could be held responsible if the victim files a lawsuit.
