Are Ohio car accidents and drowsy driving related?

Every year, there are motor vehicle accidents in Ohio that lead to serious injury or death. Some of these can be avoided by being a more responsible driver.

Drowsy driving is one of the most common reasons for a motor vehicle accident. When a person is tired and behind the wheel, there is a better chance that he or she could cause an accident, which may include at least one other vehicle.

Here are some of the myths and facts associated with drowsy driving, as shared by the American Safety Council:

-- Myth: Coffee can help a person overcome the effect of being drowsy. This is not a substitute for getting enough sleep, as the effects of caffeine wear off fast.

-- Myth: I will know when I am going to fall asleep, giving me time to pull over. Many people think this is true; however, they find themselves nodding off anyway.

-- Fact: Sleeping and driving don't go together. Estimates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that roughly 200,000 motor vehicle accidents every year are related to fatigue.

There is never a good time to drive when you are tired. Even if a person is feeling slightly drowsy, it is better to be safe than sorry. Getting behind the wheel is a big risk, as it could lead to an accident.

You can control if you are too tired to drive, but you never know what others on the road are doing. Anybody involved in an accident with a drowsy driver may want to consult with an attorney about his or her rights.
