Eye-tracking to diagnose brain injuries, concussions

The neurological community is abuzz after a relatively simple test successfully detected brain injuries in patients. The test scans patients' eye movements while they watch a four-minute music video.

In patients without brain injuries, the horizontal and vertical eye movements are 50/50. In patients with brain trauma, the ratio is imbalanced. The eye-tracking test is portable and relatively inexpensive so it will likely soon appear on battlefields and on the sidelines of athletic events, in addition to ambulances, ERs and medical clinics.

In addition to helping with rapid diagnoses of brain injury, the test is not invasive and can be used conjunctively with neuroimaging to help doctors understand the full extent of The research was recently published in the Journal of Neurosurgery.

Until recently, relatively little was known in the medical field about the diagnosis and treatment of brain injuries. Research has taken off dramatically since physicians realized that a huge population of soldiers returning from service in the Middle East was suffering from undiagnosed brain injuries. The estimates of Americans suffering a brain injury each year range from 1.8 to 4 million.

While the diagnosis of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) is rapidly evolving, the treatment methods are lagging. Cooling blankets, surgical decompression of the brain and protein treatments have proved effective for immediate treatment of severe brain injury, but we are likely still in the relative stone age of TBI treatment.

If someone in your family is suffering from brain injury caused by the negligence of another, an experienced personal injury attorney can help you assess your options.
