Fatal auto accidents are costly for Ohio taxpayers

Automotive accidents in Ohio have a huge impact on the state. Not only do these accidents cause injuries and deaths, they also impose significant financial consequences on the state. Consider how news reports always feature collisions that occur around the state, especially during wintry weather conditions.

In our state alone, there is an impact of $1.23 billion in a single year as the result of fatal crash-related costs. That sum includes $13 million in medical costs and $1.21 billion in work costs and involves deaths of pedestrians, motorcyclists, bicyclists and motor vehicle occupants.

For those aged five to 34 years, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death. In fact, motor vehicle accidents are in the top 10 list of death causes for people of all ages. For the young adults in the 20 - 34 age group, the cost of fatal motor vehicle accidents is around $506 million. The cost for adults aged 35 to 64 is slightly lower at $426 million. The price for teens is around $195 million, while costs for children 14 and under hover around $61 million. Senior citizens rank the lowest at $37 million.

With these fatal accident costs in mind, Ohio residents should be aware of using the proper safety precautions when driving or even as passengers and pedestrians. Driving safely and obeying the traffic laws are ways that people can reduce these deadly statistics and costs. Anyone who has had a loved one die in an accident that was the fault of another driver has the right to seek compensation for their loved one's death and other financial damages.
