Falling furniture, TVs responsible for brain injuries in children

The debate about preventable childhood brain injuries focuses heavily on high-contact sports such as football and hockey, but many toddlers and young children are exposed to a common danger on a daily basis: unsecured televisions and furniture.

Approximately 25,000 children are injured each year by falling furniture or TVs, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Some kids are lucky enough to escape with a few bumps and bruises but many suffer concussions and serious brain injuries.

In 2014, A Chicago girl died from head injuries caused by a falling television. A second-grader in Nebraska recently suffered memory loss and functionality problems after a TV fell on his head. These are just a few of many sad stories concerning unstable furniture and electronics.

Parents should take the following precautions in their homes:

  • Secure TVs by anchoring them to the wall.
  • If you are using a TV base, ensure that it is low and sturdy.
  • If your television rests on top of furniture, secure it as far back as possible from children's reach.
  • Move cords away from the reach of children.
  • Anchor dressers, bookshelves and other pieces of heavy furniture to the wall or floor.

If your child has been seriously injured or killed by a piece of furniture, you may have a personal injury claim. Speak with an experienced premises liability attorney, and be prepared to answer the following questions:

  • Did the accident occur on your property or someone else's?
  • Was your child supervised when the accident occurred?
  • Was the furniture or electronics installed in accordance to the manufacturer's directions and any warnings heeded?
  • What is the diagnosis and outlook for your child's injury?

A reputable lawyer will review your case in a free consultation and let you know what your legal options are.
