Ohio motorcycle accidents and the many types of vehicles

When most people think about a motorcycle accident, the first thing that comes to mind is a Harley Davidson or sport bike that can easily reach speeds of triple digits.

Did you know there are other types of vehicles that are considered motorcycles by the U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration? These include mopeds, off road motorcycles, scooters, mini bikes, three-wheeled motorcycles and pocket bikes.

According to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 93 percent of all fatal motorcycle crashes involved the two-wheeled variety of motorcycle. This may be a large number, but it does mean that another 7 percent of motorcycles in fatal crashes were other types.

Speaking of statistics, here is another from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration "In 2012, 4,957 motorcyclists were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes -- an increase of 7 percent from the 4,630 motorcyclists killed in 2011." This does not account for the 93,000 people who were injured in a motorcycle accident in 2012, which is an increase of 15 percent over 2011.

Every year in the state of Ohio, as well as every other part of the country, people are injured and killed in a motorcycle accident. There are times when the motorcyclist is at fault and times when another party, such as a truck driver, is to blame. Some motorcyclists opt to consult with an attorney after their accident. This allows them to get a better understanding of their legal rights and whether or not they are in position to file a claim to collect compensation.
