Truckers, passenger vehicle drivers can help reduce accidents

Although there is no way to completely eliminate truck accidents, there are steps truckers can take to help avoid this type of trouble in the future.

Every year, there are hundreds of thousands of commercial vehicle accidents. In some cases, everybody walks away uninjured. Other accidents, however, cause serious injury or death.

Commercial truck drivers should do whatever possible to avoid causing an accident. At the same time, drivers of passenger vehicles should take special are as well.

A truck accident can occur for a number of reasons, many of which are avoidable. Some of the most common causes include:

-- Speeding

-- Failure of the trucker to obey the law

-- Under-inflated tires

-- Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol

-- Drowsy driving

-- Distracted driving, such as texting or talking on a cell phone

-- Poor truck maintenance, such as failing to secure a load

-- Reckless driving

These are the types of things that a trucker should avoid, as it will keep them, as well as other drivers, safer at all times.

As the driver of a passenger vehicle, you should keep a safe distance from trucks while also avoiding their blind spot when possible.

Knowing why truck accidents happen can help you avoid trouble on the roadway. There will always be accidents, as the number of trucks and cars on the nation's roads continues to increase, but there are also things people can do to reduce the risk of trouble.
