Are you familiar with the risks of truck driver fatigue?

Drivers of passenger vehicles don't often think about the mental state of those around them. Instead, they hope that everybody is in condition to drive their vehicle in a safe manner.

Truck drivers must take extra safety precautions at all times. Not only are they driving the largest vehicles on the road, but they are often behind the wheel for an extended period of time.

According to Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, truck accidents kill more than 5,000 people in the United States every year. Furthermore, approximately 150,000 people are injured in such accidents.

There are many reasons for a truck accident, with driver fatigue at the top of the list. When a commercial driver is fatigued, he or she is not in position to navigate the roadway in a safe manner.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration notes that more than 20,000 people are injured and 750 people are killed every year as the direct result of commercial vehicle driver fatigue.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is aware of this risk, which is why there are laws in place that limit how many consecutive hours truckers can stay on the road. The problem is simple: not everybody follows these laws, even though they are required to do so.

If you plan on continuing to drive, it would be in your best interest to pay close attention to the behavior of truck drivers. This could be the difference between avoiding an accident and being injured. A truck accident, due to the size of the vehicle, can cause serious damage, injury and death.
