Truckers and mobile phone use

It is easy for a truck driver to become distracted. Long hours on the road can be boring, but that doesn't give a trucker an excuse to take his or her eyes off the road.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration shares a variety of information on truck driver safety. More specifically, details regarding what a trucker is and is not allowed to do with regard to mobile phone use.

Truck drivers are prohibited from texting and driving while behind the wheel. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, texting is defined as the manual input of any alphanumeric text into a mobile device. This also includes reading such messages.

The good thing for truckers is that there are ways they can use a mobile device without breaking the law. This includes things such as using an earpiece or speakerphone. Furthermore, one button touch and voice-activated prompts are available for answering or terminating a call.

If a trucker is caught texting and driving or using a mobile device in an illegal manner, the consequences can be serious. This includes driver disqualification and large penalties reaching as high as $2,750.

When truck drivers use mobile devices in an illegal manner, they are increasing the chance of being involved in an accident. Subsequently, they risk involving other drivers who are sharing the road.

It is important for truckers and truck companies to police themselves when it comes to distracted driving. This can go a long way in preventing accidents that have been proven to cause serious injury and death.
