The types of people who treat a brain injury

If a person suffers a traumatic brain injury, it is likely that he or she will receive medical treatment for an extended period of time. In the most serious of situations, this treatment can last for many years.

Following a traumatic brain injury, such as one that is the result of a motor vehicle accident, a person will be treated in an emergency room setting.

Once stabilized, he or she will move to the care of a traumatic brain injury specialist. This person is responsible for overseeing the entire recovery and treatment process.

Depending on the severity of the injury, it is possible that this type of injury could call for surgery. If not immediate, the patient will have the opportunity to seek the best surgeon available for their injury.

Here are some of the other types of professionals who treat a traumatic brain injury:

-- Dietitian or nutritionist. A person who suffers a traumatic brain injury may need to adjust one's diet.

-- Neurologist. This type of medical professional specializes in treatment of the brain and nerves.

-- Occupational therapist. These people help a person recover from one's injury, learning how to once again deal with basic daily tasks such as eating and getting dressed.

If you suffer a traumatic brain injury, you never know what type of people you will run into along the way. What matters most is that you receive the best treatment available from the appropriate medical professionals. The road to recovery can be long, stressful, and costly. The good thing is that there are people who will provide assistance along the way.
