What does it mean for a trucker to be distracted?

As you drive down the highway, you realize that sharing the road with others, including truck drivers, is a must.

Paying attention to the road in front of you is your responsibility. However, there is something you cannot control: what others drivers are doing as they are in close proximity to your vehicle.

Trucks are among the largest vehicles on the road, making them extremely dangerous. When one of these is involved in an accident, especially with a passenger vehicle, there is a good chance of extensive damage, along with injury and possible death.

A distraction is defined as anything that diverts the attention of a driver from the primary task at hand, which is to navigate his or her vehicle in a safe and appropriate manner. Despite many laws in place to protect against distracted driving, some truckers continue to make this mistake.

When a trucker takes his or her eyes off the road, there is a greater chance of an accident. A distraction is a distraction, regardless of if it is visual, cognitive or manual.

As noted by many studies, including those conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a distracted truck driver has a greater chance of causing an accident. It only takes one distraction for a truck driver to make a mistake that causes an accident. This is why these drivers need to avoid distractions at all costs.

When a passenger vehicle is involved in an accident with a truck, it is often the person in the smaller vehicle that suffers the most serious injuries.
