Ways to prevent distracted driving among teens

Traffic accidents are the number one cause of death for teenagers in the United States. Furthermore, teens are more likely than others to text and drive, which increases the chance of causing an accident.

Preventing distracted driving will lead to fewer motor vehicle accidents. Subsequently, fewer people will be injured and killed on the nation's roadways.

For many years, lawmakers and organizations have been looking for ways to help teenagers realize the importance of avoiding distractions while driving. Even so, this remains a major problem in every state.

Here are a few of the ways you can keep yourself and others safe while driving:

-- Commit yourself to avoiding distractions while driving.

-- Make it known that you are doing the right thing. This can be contagious, as others will follow in your footsteps.

-- Speak up. Let others know that distracted driving is dangerous. As a teen, you can tell your friends. As a parent, you can tell your children. Spreading the word is important.

Every state has strict laws against distracted driving, such as texting while behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. These laws are meant to stop people from partaking in such activities, but have yet to be as effective as law enforcement officials have hoped.

It doesn't matter if you are a teenager or adult, if you find yourself on the road you should avoid distractions at all costs. One mistake can cause an accident that injures or kills you or somebody else. This is not a risk anybody should be willing to take.
