Key findings among alcohol impaired driving accidents

Driving under the influence of alcohol is never a good idea. When a person has too much to drink and then gets behind the wheel, he or she has a greater chance of causing an accident. Subsequently, the accident can cause serious injury or death, along with property damage.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were more than 10,000 fatalities in 2013 in motor vehicle accidents involving a driver with a blood alcohol content level of .08 or higher.

This statistic may help you understand how common these accidents really are: There was an average of one alcohol impaired fatality every 52 minutes in 2013.

On the surface, it is often difficult to understand the true cost of these accidents. All in all, alcohol impaired crashes in 2010 cost the United States nearly $50 billion.

Finally, it is important to note that these accidents do not discriminate based on age. Anybody can be injured or killed in an accident caused by a drunk driver. For example, of traffic deaths among children 14 and younger, approximately 17 percent were the result of alcohol.

When people drive under the influence, they are not just risking their life. They are also putting others in harm's way. In some cases, the person who is drunk is not the person who is injured or killed. Instead, it is an innocent victim who gets the worst of the accident.

These types of statistics should help all drivers understand that drinking and driving is extremely dangerous. This behavior costs the country a lot of money, while also killing and injuring many people.
