Do you understand these challenges facing motorcyclists?

If you own a motorcycle, you know that it can be one of the greatest joys in life to hit the open road. However, you should also realize something else to be true: One poor decision, either by you or another driver, could lead to an accident that causes serious injury or death.

Motorcyclists and passenger vehicle drivers should share the road. They should also realize the unique challenges that both types of drivers face.

Here are some of the many challenges that have caused motorcycle accidents in the past, and will continue to do so in the future:

-- Visual recognition. Motorcycles are smaller, which means that other vehicles don't always see them. This is particularly true of larger vehicles, such as trucks, because of their expansive blind spots.

-- Road hazards. There are many types of hazards, such as potholes and debris, which can cause trouble for a motorcyclist.

-- Riding skills. Even the most experienced riders could face a situation that is new to them. Subsequently, they don't know how to act. This greatly increases the chance of an accident.

It doesn't matter if you are a motorcyclist or driving another type of vehicle, you should become familiar with the challenges that everybody on the road is dealing with.

Motorcyclists enjoy the open road, but they don't often consider the fact that an accident could occur at any time. If you better understand the challenges facing motorcyclists, you can do your part in preventing accidents. This will keep you, as well as others on the road, safer at all times.
