The rehab phase after a spinal cord injury

If you or a loved one suffer a spinal cord injury, it does not mean your life is over. It simply means you need to adjust your approach to the future. At some point, once you are stabilized, you will begin the rehabilitation process. This phase of recovery is never easy, but it is important when it comes to regaining control of your life.

There is one primary goal that everybody shares during the rehab phase: to return as much function to your mind and body as possible.

Since every spinal cord injury is different, the way you rehab may not be exactly the same as the next person. Even so, your plan could include some or all of the following:

-- Understanding the extent of your injuries

-- Learning how to become independent once again, such as with daily activities (eating, bathing, grooming, etc.)

-- Learning how to accept your new lifestyle and make it work for you

-- Getting prepared for vocational rehabilitation

-- Learning how to instruct others, such as caregivers, to provide you with the right type of assistance

A spinal cord injury does not mean the end of your life. It means that you need to change your goals and learn how to live with this injury.

The rehab phase is never easy. In fact, it can be downright frustrating at times. Furthermore, it can be extremely expensive. Even with all this in mind, you need to understand the importance. Once you make your way through rehab, you will feel better about the future.
