What does the initial intervention for brain injury entail?

When a person suffers a traumatic brain injury, it is important that he or she receives the appropriate treatment without delay. The sooner the person is examined and treated by an experienced medical team, the better chance he or she has of making a full recovery.

Once a person is diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, which typically occurs in an emergency department setting, they are moved to the next stage in the process: a neuro-radiological examination. With the help of an MRI and/or CT scan, the medical team is able to learn more about the injuries, including any signs of trauma, such as bleeding or increased pressure.

It is at this point that a big decision needs to be made. There are times when a person can be admitted to the intensive care unit for close monitoring. There are also times when it makes sense to move immediately to surgery, such as if there is too much pressure on the brain. Neglecting to do so at the right time could have a negative impact on the person's chance of survival. In less severe cases, there are some types of medication that can be used to treat complications.

A traumatic brain injury is a big deal. This is one of the worst types of injuries you can suffer. Fortunately, if all the right steps are taken, you will give yourself the best opportunity to overcome the injury and regain your normal life down the road. This is why it is imperative to be initially treated by an experienced medical team.
