Can medication be used to treat a brain injury?

When a person suffers a brain injury, there is no way of immediately knowing what type of treatment will work best. Instead, it is up to the medical team to make key decisions. While there is no "magic pill" for the treatment of a brain injury, there are medications that are used to help people in this position.

Generally speaking, medications are administered in an attempt to limit secondary damage. Some of the most common types include:

-- Anti-seizure drugs. When people suffer a moderate to severe brain injury they are at greater risk of having a seizure. The use of this type of drug, especially during the first week, can help them avoid additional damage caused by a seizure.

-- Diuretics. These drugs are administered to help reduce the amount of fluid build up in tissues, while also increasing urine output.

-- Coma inducing drugs. As scary as this can be, these drugs are often used to put a person into a temporary coma. By doing so, the brain requires less oxygen to function.

It would be nice if there were a medication that could be used to heal every type of brain injury. Unfortunately, this does not exist. The good thing is that there are medications, such as those above, that can help treat a person with a brain injury.

If you or a loved one suffer a brain injury in Ohio, it is comforting to know that there are treatment options available. This includes the use of medication to avoid side effects and accelerate the healing process.
