Don't put yourself in danger after a traffic accident

Have you ever stopped to think about what you would do if you were in an accident on the highway or interstate? If you haven't, now is a good time to make a plan for what you will do. There is one thing that experts say you should do -- stay away from traffic.

Ideally, you will move your vehicle out of the travel lanes if at all possible after the accident. Once you do that, you should remain in your vehicle. Your vehicle will provide added protection for you if something happens and another vehicle comes careening toward you.

If you aren't able to get your vehicle away from traffic lanes, you should get out of the vehicle if it is safe. You need to move as far away from the lanes as possible. If there is a barrier up on the side of the road and you can safely cross that barrier, do so. The barrier can act as a protective device for you.

While it is possible to make plans about how you will handle being involved in an accident on the highway or interstate, it is often necessary to have more than one plan. For example, if you are in an accident in a thunderstorm or blizzard, leaving your vehicle wouldn't be a good thing to do. Taking the current conditions into account when you are in the accident is crucial.

Of course, if you are involved in an accident, you should call 911 or the local emergency services. Get the other driver's information just in case you end up deciding to file a claim for compensation. Be sure to get medical care if you are injured.
