Truckers should follow these wet weather driving tips

With the spring season in full swing, it's important for drivers to realize that wet weather will come into play from time to time.

Truckers, for example, should change their approach when driving in the rain. By making a few simple changes, these drivers can lessen the chance of being involved in an accident.

According to AAA, approximately 1.2 million traffic accidents every year are contributed to wet pavement.

The primary goal of every driver is the same: to make sure you can see and be seen.

Here are some additional tips that every trucker should follow:

-- Maintain a safe following distance. There is never a good time to ride too close to another vehicle, but this is even more so the case in the rain. Remember, wet pavement increases stopping time.

-- Slow down. This should be common sense, however, it is something that many truck drivers ignore. Even with the rain pouring down some drivers don't take their foot off the accelerator.

-- Don't slam on the brakes. While this is not always possible, you should do your best to avoid this situation. When you slam your brakes in the rain, there is a good chance of skidding.

When truckers follow these wet weather driving tips, they improve their ability to get from point A to point B without incident. Conversely, when truckers ignore the wet weather, they increase the risk of an accident.

If an accident does occur, such as one between you and a truck, do your best to get out of harm's way and then contact the authorities for assistance.
