Are you familiar with critical events that cause truck accidents?

As a driver of a passenger vehicle, you know that sharing the road with trucks is something you cannot avoid. No matter where you are driving, including in the city or on the highway, there will always be trucks in close proximity.

While most truckers do whatever they can to avoid trouble, some are reckless to the point of being dangerous. Even if you do your best to keep your distance, there is a chance that a trucker's poor decision could lead you to being involved in a serious and sometimes fatal accident.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, there are three types of critical events assigned to large trucks:

-- Running out of their travel lane, either off the road or into another lane.

-- Loss of control as the result of vehicle failure, poor road conditions, cargo shift or speeding.

-- Colliding with the rear of another car.

As you can imagine, all of these situations are extremely serious. For instance, if a truck hits a smaller vehicle from behind on the highway, it can lead to extensive damage, serious injuries and even death.

It is your responsibility to drive safely. However, this doesn't mean you can control what others are doing on the road.

If you are ever involved in a truck accident, remove your vehicle from traffic, if possible, and then conduct a health check. From there, receive medical attention. Once you are feeling better, you can learn more about your legal rights, including an examination of the accident in hopes of pinpointing the cause. Then you can learn more about seeking compensation for your medical expenses and losses.
