Brain injuries are possible in stroller and carrier accidents

Parents of young children often turn to strollers and baby carriers when they need to bring their child somewhere that will require walking. That decision could be dangerous, according to a recent study.

The study, which combed through data in the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System from 1990 to 2010, found that each year more than 17,000 youngsters ages 5 years old and younger are taken to the emergency room because of incidents involving baby carriers and strollers. Interestingly, around one-fourth of the injuries were traumatic brain injuries or concussions instead of simple bumps and bruises. Of the injuries that required hospitalization, up to 65 percent of stroller accidents and 79 percent of carrier accidents were brain injuries.

Interestingly, the study found that the majority of the children who were injured were under a year old. When it comes to carrier-related injuries, around 89 percent of the children were under a year old. for stroller injuries, infants under a year old accounted for 42 percent.

Another area that proved interesting was the rate of hospitalizations for each type of accident. Stroller accidents had a hospitalization rate of 2.4 percent, but carrier accidents had a much higher rate with 6.5 percent requiring hospitalization.

While it is possible for parents to take steps to increase the safety of their children in strollers and carriers, it isn't possible for parents to prevent all accidents. Recalled products can cause some of the issues, so make sure you check frequently to find out if the gear you use has been recalled. If your baby is harmed in an accident involving carriers or strollers, you might opt to seek compensation.
