Know some facts about semi truck maneuverability

Big rig accidents can affect victims in ways that are very unexpected. These accidents are often preventable, which makes it even more maddening that they occur. There are some points that people who share the road with these big trucks should understand so that they can try to avoid crashes if at all possible.

Semi trucks have large blind spots. The trucker isn't able to see drivers who are in these spots. The sides of the trailer can be a blind spot. The blind spot in the rear can extend up to 200 feet behind the trailer. The blind spot in front encompasses the 20 feet in front of the truck.

Speaking of that front blind spot -- it is never a good idea to drive in that spot. This is especially true if you are darting into traffic. Semi trucks might not be able to slow down quickly enough if you cut them off in traffic. Additionally, don't try to drive on the right side of a truck that is turning right. These large trucks often have to make wide turns, so the trucker might move left to turn right.

Semi trucks, especially those that have fully loaded trailers, take more time to stop than smaller vehicles. While you would likely be able to stop in around 130 to 140 feet if your vehicle is traveling at 55 mph. A semi truck would need at least 190 to 200 feet to stop at the same speed. That distance increases to as much as 450 feet if the truck's brakes are hot from rapid use, such as when traveling in city traffic.

Accidents with semi trucks can cause serious injuries. These trucks can be as long as 65 feet and weight upwards of 80,000 pounds. If you are injured by one of these massive vehicles, you can opt to seek compensation for those injuries.
