Study shows traumatic brain injury prevalent in prison

A person who suffers a traumatic brain injury may have some behavioral changes occur. Sadly, those can involve getting into legal trouble. One study found that people who have a traumatic brain injury are more than twice as likely to be incarcerated in a federal facility as those who haven't suffered a TBI.

Researchers looked at data from Canadian prisons. The study compared information from 1997 and 2011. Interestingly, researchers found that there was a greater chance that a person with a person with a TBI would remain in prison for that time than a person who didn't have such an injury.

Researchers found that people who were between the ages of 18 and 28 years old who had a history of traumatic brain injury had a .5 percent incarceration rate. People without a history of this type of brain injury had an incarceration rate of only .2 percent.

One theory for the uptick in incarceration rates is that the behavioral changes in people following a TBI lead them to act in a manner that is uncharacteristic of the person's previous ways. This can include behaving in ways that are socially unacceptable or doing things that break the law.

As disturbing as this information is, it is a clear reminder that people who suffer a brain injury will likely need some sort of the mental health therapy. This can be a costly undertaking, but that cost might be more manageable if a successful claim for compensation is made. Learning how to proceed with a claim is the first step in seeking compensation.
