Knee replacement may cause more pain, not less

knee.jpgMore than a million people each year undergo knee replacement surgery. As of 2012, at least 4.5 million people had at least one knee replaced. A total or partial knee replacement uses an artificial joint to replace diseased bone and relieve the patient's pain. Most knee replacement procedures are undertaken to provide relief from the pain caused by arthritis.

Volkswagen emission-cheating scandal and VW owners' recall rights

Owners of Volkswagen and Audi diesel vehicles may be able to pursue money damages for harm caused by the automakers' cheating scheme on emission standards. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uncovered the scandal in Sept. 2015, angering VW owners, investors and environmentalists. The emission cheating scandal was not a mistake or oversight - it was deliberate.

Magnetic toys expose children to life-threatening injuries

magnetsXray.jpgMore than 22,500 children visited the ER for magnet ingestion during a 9-year span. The problem is so prevalent that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) approved new national safety standards for high-powered magnet sets in 2014. In some instances the magnet manufacturer was prompted to recall its products, as SCS Direct did with its Magnet Balls Manipulative Magnet Set in 2013.

FDA Suspends Pediatric Trial Of Common Drug

In a concerning development, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ended a clinical trial of a common calcium receptor drug known as Sensipar or cinacalcet hydrochloride. While the FDA approved this drug years ago for several uses in adult patients, the company's manufacturer was undertaking further trials to determine whether the drug is also safe and effective for children.

Birth-Control Defects and "Wrongful Birth" Lawsuits

For most families, the arrival of a child should be a joyful occasion. However, in some situations, an unexpected newborn poses a serious difficulty. Many families take proactive precautions to ensure that they will not be confronted with a pregnancy until they are ready - birth-control pills are one of the most common and convenient forms of contraception available today.

Fungal Meningitis Update: New Risks For Victims

Authorities are linking the same steroids responsible for the fungal meningitis outbreak to a new outbreak of conditions. These conditions appear to affect meningitis victims and include epidural abscesses and arachnoiditis. As patients here in Ohio and around the country try to recover from an initial battle against fungal meningitis, they may find themselves fighting yet another battle against these conditions.

Fungal Meningitis: Officials Report Sterility Lapses

The fungal meningitis outbreak continued this week as the number of reported cases rose to more than 300, including some here in Ohio. At least 24 people have died in 17 states. Health authorities are now reporting the first findings from an inspection of the compounding pharmacy that is apparently responsible for the outbreak.

Massive Settlement Closes Case Over Improperly Marketed Drugs

Johnson & Johnson reached a settlement deal with 36 states, ending a case alleging that it improperly marketed Risperdal and Invega for unapproved uses. The $181 million settlement is the largest agreement to come from a multistate consumer protection pharmaceutical case. Settlements like this demonstrate a lack of tolerance for marketing practices that risk dangerous medication or prescription errors.
