How do doctors treat spinal cord injuries?

As of right now, there is no way to reverse damage to the spinal cord. While researchers hope to change this in the future, people who suffer this type of injury can only rely on the treatment that is currently available.

Fortunately, there are more treatment options than ever before for spinal cord injuries. If you suffer this type of injury, your medical team will be able to discuss your many options, while explaining the pros and cons of each one.

Immediately following a spinal cord injury, doctors will focus on maintaining your ability to breath, preventing you from going into shock, and immobilizing your neck to prevent additional damage.

From there, there are several treatment options to consider. For example, surgery is often necessary. Along with this, medication can be used if given shortly after the injury.

Also, there are many types of experimental treatments, some of which continue to give people great hope for better recovery. For instance, scientists are looking into ways to control inflammation and prevent cell death.

At some point, rehabilitation is a must. This is when a person with a spinal cord injury learns to cope with the impact.

No two people are the same. Along with this, no two spinal cord injuries are identical. With this in mind, the way these injuries are treated will vary.

The most important thing to remember is this: If you suffer a spinal cord injury, you should receive medical treatment as soon as possible. With the right medical team on your side, you have a better chance at lessening the impact of the injury.
