A 27-year-old man was killed Monday in a construction zone accident involving a tractor trailer.
The victim, an Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) employee from Mt. Gilead, was operating a backhoe aside Interstate 71 when a commercial truck left the road and barreled into his construction vehicle. The backhoe erupted into flames and the construction worker was pronounced dead at the scene.
The truck driver, 59, was seriously injured and was taken to the hospital. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and has not yet said what caused the 18-wheeler to leave the interstate. However, in truck accidents, fatigue is always a suspected factor.
Hopefully, this accident isn’t symbolic of the 2013 Ohio construction season. Every year, ODOT workers and motorists needlessly lose their lives in construction zones. Please, slow down and practice heightened awareness in these construction areas.
