A horrific accident recently took the lives of three people and an unborn child in Bedford, Ohio. A pregnant woman was driving with her four daughters when another motorist ran a red light and plowed into her vehicle.
The crash killed Maria Thorpe, 30, who was six-months pregnant, as well as her daughters Zariah, 8, and Zyanah, 5. Another daughter, Zumyah, age 10, is in critical condition on a ventilator. The wreck occurred at about 10 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Northfield Road and Berwyn Drive.
Police have charged the at-fault motorist, Eric Calhoun, with vehicular homicide as they believe he was driving drunk. Calhoun, 30, has been previously convicted on four counts of drug-trafficking and two counts of felony possession of a firearm. A Cuyahoga County Grand Jury will determine his fate, unless he agrees to a deal with prosecutors.
This accident is absolutely sickening. A drunk driving runs a red light and nearly eliminates an entire family. This troubled man will face serious criminal punishment, but it won’t bring any relief to surviving family members. Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the victims, as well as Zumyah, whose life hangs in the balance.
In addition to the criminal charges he’s facing, the surviving family may also bring a wrongful death claim against Calhoun if they choose.
