Ohio truck driver dies in fiery highway crash

A 59-year-old male truck driver from Jamestown, Ohio, died at the scene of a three-truck accident. The interstate highway crash occurred after the driver of a pickup truck pulling a rental trailer apparently lost control of his vehicle, causing it to veer across the median and ram head-on into the decedent’s tractor-trailer. The pickup truck also hit a box truck during the course of the accident. Both the tractor-trailer and box truck burst into flames following the collision.

Two occupants of the box truck luckily escaped being seriously injured. Investigators are still trying to determine that cause of the accident. They said that, unlike many Ohio truck accidents, there were no indications that the pickup truck driver had been abusing drugs or alcohol. Sometimes, a driver experiencing a sudden medical incident, such as a seizure or a diabetic incident, can trigger an inability to control a truck. Other times, the problem can be fatigue, mechanical failures or distracted driving as a result of texting or cellphone use.

The accident occurred at approximately 10:15 a.m., causing the highway to be close to traffic while emergency personnel rendered medical assistance, began an investigation and removed debris from the road. Portions of the highway were blocked for around 10 hours. Removing the debris of the tractor-trailer was especially difficult since it completely burned.

Truck accidents frequently result in fatalities, partially because of the weight of the vehicles involved. Wrongful death and personal injury lawsuits can bring some measure of compensation for accident victims and their families. In many truck accidents involving commercial vehicles, claims can be brought against a truck driver’s employer, as well as against the responsible driver.
