Study: Medical Device May Save Some Babies From Birth Injuries

Infants suffer birth injuries far too often, even in places like Ohio – where mothers and babies enjoy an overall standard of health care above most of the world.

In Ohio, preventable birth injuries often result from a doctor’s failure to monitor the fetus or promptly take action when a serious condition is discovered. In impoverished countries, physicians often lack the tools and technology to make accurate diagnoses or properly treat patients. Fortunately, a new medical study suggests that an inexpensive device may be able to prevent prematurely-born infants from suffering conditions such as cerebral palsy, blindness, retardation and lung problems.

A pessary is a device places around the neck of a cervix. According to researchers, this simple device is an inexpensive way to prevent premature births and the serious health problems that accompany them.

While pessaries may be an affordable way for women to carry babies in their womb longer – and avoid complications associated with premature birth – scientists still don’t understand specifically why the devices delay child birth.

If your child has suffered a birth injury resulting from hospital negligence, contact an experienced Ohio medical malpractice attorney to explore your legal options for securing compensation.
